The OpenMDW License Agreement: Simple, Permissive Terms for AI Model Materials - Steve Winslow, The Linux Foundation AI models consist of a variety of different types of components. Publicly-available AI models and their components are sometimes published under a single traditional open source software license, which may not quite fit the distribution as a whole in the way that model providers intend. The Model Openness Framework (MOF) provides a helpful framework for describing openness and completeness in AI model materials and their licensing. However, some implementers adopting the MOF’s practices have struggled with its default approach of utilizing a mix of open licenses for different types of content. In this talk, I will present the OpenMDW License Agreement (https://openmdw.ai), a short and broadly permissive license intended for open distribution of AI model materials. I will describe the purpose and context that informed OpenMDW’s drafting, and will highlight its key features for easing conformance with the MOF and further enabling open sharing of AI models.
