How we accidentally ended up with a platform engineering team

The fleet management software overhaul at our organization began with the goal of modernizing our architecture and adopting a cloud-native approach. Initially, we had a small cloud team that worked in parallel with the legacy system. Over time, development teams expanded their skill sets, taking on responsibilities in Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD, and production operations. The transition to domain-specific product teams began as the technology teams split their focus between the legacy platform and the new cloud infrastructure. As the project progressed, we restructured the cloud governance and tech teams into four platform teams, each focused on building loosely coupled capabilities for developers. The final step in the transformation came when we onboarded a dedicated product owner, who aligned our vision and led the creation of a cohesive product offering. This session will highlight the unexpected yet rewarding journey of building a platform engineering team and share insights on the evolving roles and responsibilities that helped shape our current platform strategy.
