From VDI to Kubernetes: How Topgolf rebuilt its game platform for performance and scale

Topgolf’s game platform was constrained by outdated hardware and a costly virtual desktop infrastructure that hindered automation and scalability. To address these limitations, Ethan Lilly and his team led a comprehensive rearchitecture, replacing traditional VDI with PXE-booted touchscreens equipped with built-in GPUs. These devices were integrated into Kubernetes clusters, allowing the team to deploy and manage Unity game instances inside Linux-based containers. The new architecture significantly reduced latency, enhanced reliability, and provided greater flexibility at scale - all while simplifying maintenance. In this session, Lilly shares the technical journey behind this transformation, including key design decisions, implementation challenges, and lessons learned. Attendees will gain insight into how Kubernetes and edge computing enabled Topgolf to build a robust and future-ready game platform.
